How Do I Know If I Need a New Roof?

Many people do not address roofing problems until it’s too late. It’s time to take a stand. Here’s how you should address the issue at hand.

Comb the Highest Area in Your Home

If you believe your roof is leaking, look for water stains on the ceilings on the upper floors of your house. You can also find signs in the attic. If your home has an attic, grab a flashlight and shine it underneath the eaves. Pay attention to the panels that lie above. If you can see light seeping in from the outside or any water stains in your attic, your roof has a problem that you need to address. You may be able to repair a simple leak, but if there are multiple leaks in your attic, it could be time for a roof replacement.

Prevail with a Paper Trail

Gather and review all of the paperwork for your home. You’ll need the papers that list when the roof was built and what materials were used during the construction process. Keep these documents close because they could help you develop a practical game plan. For example, if you review the data and make the proper calculations, you should be able to figure out how long your current roof can protect your home.

All roofing systems are not created equal. It all comes down to the materials. For example, an asphalt roof may last between 20 to 25 years, and a low-quality roof will have a shorter lifespan. If you have doubts or concerns, contact a local roofing company and make an appointment for a roof inspection. Afterward, the roofer will let you know what you should do next.

Mingle with the Shingles

Following every severe storm, go outside and check the state of your shingles. If any shingles are cracked or buckled, you should get them repaired. Next, carefully inspect the shingles for missing granules. If several shingles show granule loss, it’s time for a roof replacement.
